According to traditional wedding etiquette, you shouldn’t provide your guests with a Wedding Registry – it’s not the happy couple who should write up a list of preferred items. Rather, it’s guests who should carefully select the gift they consider to be most appropriate.

Historically, the purpose of a wedding registry was to help the newly married couple set up a home, while also helping guests with what to choose. These days, the etiquette surrounding wedding gift lists has shifted, with many couples asking for donations for their honeymoon or raising proceeds for their charity of choice.

The options are varied, and it’s important to have a clear idea of what you want versus what you really need. Perhaps you’ve been living together for a while already, so you won’t need much for your main residence. You could perhaps choose some furnishings or homeware for your new vacation house gifted by generous family members. Or maybe even for your boat.

There are a number of unwritten rules and expectations when putting together a wedding registry. First and foremost, don’t make your guests feel uncomfortable. Whatever you choose, guests should be able to spend as much or as little as they like, depending on their budget and relationship with you and your partner.
